چکیده

It has been suggested that advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) are responsible for the X-ray activity in nearby galactic nuclei. These X-ray bright galactic nuclei (XBGN) are a heterogeneous group which includes LINERs, low to moderate luminosity Seyferts, and narrow-line X-ray galaxies with 2 − 10 keV X-ray luminosities in the range ∼ 10 to ∼ 10 erg/s. In the absence of a radio jet, the core 15 GHz radio luminosity of an ADAF is relatively low and roughly proportional to the mass of the central black hole. The predicted radio luminosity depends primarily on the black hole mass and for XBGN typically falls in the range 10 <∼ LR <∼ 10 erg/s. We designate these as “radio quiet” XBGN. However, some level of jet activity seems to be present in most sources and the radio emission can be considerably larger than that from the ADAF core. We discuss connections between radio-bright XBGN and radio-loud, powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) and suggest that the radio activities are directly correlated with black hole spins in both cases. Even in the presence of a radio jet, high resolution, high frequency radio imaging of nearby XBGN could identify compact, inverted spectrum ADAF radio sources. The unique radio/X-ray luminosity relation is confirmed in a few cases where black hole masses are known and could be used as a tool to estimate unknown black hole masses. For radio-dim (LR <∼ 10 erg/s), X-ray bright (Lx >∼ 10 erg/s) sources, which are primarily Seyferts, the X-ray emission mechanism is not accounted for by pure ADAFs and radio activities are likely to be similar to those of the radio-quiet AGN. On the Nature of X-ray Bright Optically Normal Galaxies

Recent X-ray surveys by Chandra and XMM-Newton have revealed a population of X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies (XBONGs) at moderate redshifts. By analogy with nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, we propose that many XBONGs are powered by an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) plus an outer standard thin accretion disk. The absence of optical/UV activity in XBONGs...

Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center and Nearby Edge-on Galaxies

I review our recent Chandra surveys of the center region of the Milky Way and other nearby edge-on galaxies. Our Galactic center survey, consisting of 30 overlapping pointings, provides an unprecedented high-resolution, broadband X-ray view of a 0.8x2 square degree swath along the Galactic plane. This X-ray panorama allows a separation of the discrete source and diffuse X-ray components. Our pr...

New active galactic nuclei detected in ROSAT All Sky Survey galaxies I. Verification of selection strategy

We present the first results of a program to identify so far unknown active nuclei (AGN) in galaxies. Candidate galactic nuclei have been selected for optical spectroscopy from a cross-correlation of the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) bright source catalog with optical galaxy catalogs. A high X-ray flux has been used as pointer to galaxies with a high probability to contain active nuclei. Only gal...

A Radio Monitoring Survey of Ultra-Luminous X-Ray Sources

We present the results of a radio monitoring campaign to search for radio emission from nearby ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). These sources are bright off-nuclear X-ray point sources with luminosities exceeding LX > 1039 erg/sec. A well-defined sample of the 9 nearest ULXs has been monitored eight times during 5 months with the Very Large Array in A and B configuration. Our limiting sensi...
